What size backpack should I buy and what features do I need?
This is a question we get asked a lot. Firstly backpacks are measured in litres. A small camping backpack is around 50 litres and a large one 90 litres. It is important to buy a backpack that is the right size and suited to your backpacking needs. Don't purchase a bag that is too big or small and ensure it has a hip belt to redistribute the weight from the shoulders to the hips. Adventure Pack
(internal frame)Internal-frame camping backpacks use internal flat bars, usually of aluminium or plastic, to distribute the load's weight. Internal-frame backpacks are more flexible than external-frame backpacks, making them ideal for active adventurers such as mountain climbing and skiing. Day Packs
Day packs do not have a frame and your shoulders carry most of the weight. Some day packs have hip belts to help distribute the load. Day packs are suited to short hikes and are great for carrying cameras, snacks and water. Travel Packs
Recently introduced to the travel/outdoor scene, travel packs are a great addition to the adventurous traveller's luggage. They generally combine a highly functional, durable and practical backpack with a secure, comfortable harness. Travel packs generally provide capacities between 60 and 100 litres, and will have a zip off day pack, carry handle, shoulder strap, and zip away harness, and are front loading much like a suitcase.
